For the eighth year in a row, the popular Johnny G Golf Scramble held at Maxwelton Braes sold out to a field of 140 men and women golfers. On Sunday, September 27, 35 foursomes battled it out amongst blustery conditions and occasional rain.
Tony Gonzales, the brother of the late Johnny Gonzales whom the tournament is named after, was on the winning team with a score of 12 under. Completing the winning foursome was Mark Basch, Mike Becker, and Dick Brish. The team of Bobby Boettcher, Rich Weisgerber, Dale Williams, and Jim Tischler, finished one stroke behind the winners, but cashed in with the only skin of the day with a birdie on #12. In the mixed division, the team of Steve and Tera Mueller and Joel and Holly Thomas came out on top.
The Johnny G Golf Scramble funds the Johnny G Scholarship Fund that has donated nearly $20,000 in scholarships to children of single parent families from Gibraltar Area Schools.
Red Cross Holds “Golf Classic” at Horseshoe Bay
The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter held its fifth Annual Door County Golf Classic on Monday, August 31 at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club. Twenty-nine teams participated in the 18-hole event that raised $21,000.
Taking first placing for the lowest gross score was the team of Nicolet Title (Rich Nelson, Tom Komp, Tim Nelson and Scott Lade). First place for the lowest net score was Door County Memorial Hospital with team members Bob Scieszinski, Dan Boes, Jerry Worrick and Jake Schulz.
The money raised from the Door County Golf Classic will go to support services in eight counties including families affected by disasters, provide rides for those 60 and over and those with disabilities get to medical, nutritional and employment needs, and continue to provide life-saving training classes for people in our community.
Bonnie Braes Rallies For A Cure

The Bonnie Braes Women’s League of Maxwelton Braes poses together after their event to raise money for cancer.
On September 10, The Bonnie Braes Women’s League at Maxwelton Braes hosted an event to raise money to fight cancer. Thirty league members and invited guests, all wearing their favorite pink ensemble, participated in this 18-hole, par-three event.
Over $1,000 was raised for two worthy organizations: $600 was donated to Rally for the Cure, a national breast cancer awareness program that emphasizes the importance of early detection in the successful treatment of breast cancer, and $443 was donated to Door Cancer, a local organization assisting patients with expenses involved in their treatment of cancer.
